review Seasoned Timber 103 Nobody values anything for its endurance nowadays T C Hulme headmaster of the Clifford Vermont Academy muses Long devoted to the school and to his eccentric aunt T C is increasingly aware that life is passing him by His hopes are renewed when he falls in love with a new teacher 20 years his junior But as Dorothy Canfield Fisher shows neither. This novel was double sided for me When it was telling the story of Timothy Hulme principal of The Academy I really enjoyed it When it became a thinly veiled dissertation on Socialist ideals I wearied of it It took me over a year to read this book because I put it down for a while as I couldn t stand the constant analyzing of every thought of every action by the main character and the heavy handed way in which the author s political views were thrust at the reader I have only read one other of Fisher s novels and loved it but after this one I have discovered that I must give her about 200 pages before things start happening This novel as her other The Bent Twig is of a character study than anything else I do appreciate the truths that can be found in her writing and how she stays true to the story without ever feeling the need to give every character a happy ending as the reader may wish Her characters are real and they develop and grow before your eyes and you feel in the end that you ve grown right along with them As I do enjoy her characters and their stories I will continue reading her books but just hope the others aren t as full of or are less obvious in her political turn of mind
