I ll give this book a three to three and a half starsThe story is that of a insect specialist who follows a new super drug that once ingested by a man insures that only male children will be born This scientist his wife and a handful of friends try to alert the world before it comes crashing down on the head of the world but to no avail It ends rather abruptly with only the last two or three chapters dealing with the results of having little to no female childrenI m not certain what to think about this book It was interesting but it wasn t told in the way of most novels It was letters to his daughter to explain what had happened and caused the imbalance A lot of the book was just rambling on his various studies and him telling us how he spent the day He really didn t do anything in the book seeing as he was a stay at home father It was mostly just re told stories he d gotten from his companion and friendsOne of the things that really bothered me was the utter lack of interest in the ones affected by this the women Aside from a mention of women putting the drug in their husbands food no women are mentioned This tricks me as incredibly weird seeing as this book in some ways is a treatise on the worth of baby girls Oh he goes on and on about how horrible it is for those poor men He laments over the sterilization of men if you re having only boys it works out the same in the end He says how sad that these men won t be able to be married He says how they ll break out in protests and riots but nothing NOTHING about those that are at the heart of this There was one mention of a rumor of the theft of baby girls but that was it No records of kidnappings No looking into violence directed at these women Nothing It almost felt as if he were trying to bestow this great virtue on women while at the same time not realizing how little he truly thinks of them I mean how can you shout the glory of women while you effectively and completely ignore them and then lament about the poor poor men

An elegantly written dystopian piece The author takes as his starting point the preference for male children in many cultures Folk remedies for encouraging the birth of a male have always existed and in this short novel Maloof imagines scientists successfully developing such a substance and distributiing it through these channels to avoid legal scrutiny The substance is irreversible permanently sterilising the man who ingests it from producing female children This is initially welcomed in the affluent North as a way of reducing the population of the South but as the gender balance becomes imbalanced and females grow scarce the implications for the planet grow increasingly grim This goes beyond gender issues to discuss how racism allows the developed world to allow the developing world to suffer catastrophe while falsely believing it can insulate itself from the conseuences A brilliant allegory about ineuality racism and the fear of migration

When One is powerless against Leprosy one attacks the leper one builds walls to uarantine himCentury old Wisdom Century old Folly A French entomologist along with his Journalist partner and a mentor discover growing gender disparity and set about bringing the attention of the World to this new Super drug that is being used for sterilizing males permanently against producing any female offspring and therefore satisfying the century old love of having male heirs Initially the rich North sees the use of this drug as a method of population control for the poor South not realizing that salvation must be for the whole planet or not at all The general population faces destruction and chaos when females become increasingly rare and the men erupt in anger causing violence at not being given the chance to have a family A very well written easy to read dystopian piece but very close to the reality we live inIt deals with the themes of not only gender bias but also racism migration and social ineuality among othersThe parallels among the affluent North poor South with our own World where the developed Countries think themselves independent of the issues faced by the developing Countries is surreal However the ending felt rushed and unfinishedAlso being a book about the importance of females it lacked a strong female presence and failed to show their take on the crises Extra points for not letting me lose interest
